Did you have your P R S today..? |
WARNING: A good race might cause 'PRS'. A Post Race Syndrome is not dangerous and disappears sooner than you might expect. A few remedies help to get over it even sooner. One of them is reading latest HOTSOCKS weblog entry: The final leg... Oh, by the way, to get a real insight into short handed offshore sailing, this "Top 10 things you do offshore that you would never do at home..." might be useful and comes to you from 'The World of HOTSOCKS'. Thank you, Katie and Mat, for your blogging during this race.

Pendragon's dramatic Leg 3 |
Last night yacht PENDRAGON lost her mast approximately halfway Leg 3. She and her crew are a bit shattered, but safe. Georges and Jan managed to get the remainder of the mast on deck, tied it properly and continued their voyage to Bergen with help of the engine. They arrived early this morning at the hospitable Askøy Marina. Your reporter took the following pictures. They will give more info on the tragic event on their weblog soon.

Leg 3 |
26-06, 19.30UTC Leg 3 is underway and after their eventful leg 2 Hotsocks is again chasing Rafiki. Very impressive sailing by Promineo Racing so far, now just in front of Greyhound. The leaders have 120 to go to the finish at Marstein Lighthouse, south of Bergen. At the moments the wind is SSW 15-20kn. At night veering W and decreasing. Tomorrow the wind will probably die down completely and return at 25-30kn from the SSE tomorrow night. JR

Start Leg 3 at 1100 BST |
After a wonderful stay in Lerwick with a lot of social events (get an impression at Fastrak's photo gallery, including the Prize Giving and a BBQ at Leslie Irvine's (!!), today, 26 June 2011, at 1100 BST the final leg in this epic race will start in Lerwick to finish near Bergen at Marsteinen Lighthouse. The traditional skippers briefing will be held at the famous Lerwick Boating Club early this morning. It looks very quiet outside after a frontal passage with rain and 20+ knots wind last night. Later on in the race wind is expected to increase and back to S S E. The trackers are all sending their position reports at the moment so the race chart is up and running. Enjoy the race!

Shot in the foot by our own optimism... or? |
"As we finally cleared the last headland and viewed for the first time the start line .... we could see the entire leet some 5-7 miles to leeward. “At least they haven’t horizoned us” pointed out Matt. Now was the time to start reeling in the yachts...." Recommended reading !: From the World of Hotsocks and their amazing recovery in Leg 2.

Finish times at Lerwick (LEG 2) |
Quite sensational results we think: Look at the 1 sec time difference between VANDAL and DENEBOLA. Also worth mentioning is the dog fight in the last miles to the finish line between HOTSOCKS and RAFIKI. We intend to publish a bit more about HOTSOCKS race and how they managed to to finish in the top three even though they started 2 hours late! Download the results of Leg 2

Line honours are at stake! |
23-06, 19.30UTC Averaging at times more than 8kn. Rafiki and Hotsocks are at the moment a few nm E of Bressay, and not more than 0,1nm between them! It looks like both are choosing to approach Lerwick Harbour from the N of the Island. The NW-wind is decreasing which could make the last few miles tricky. Line honours are at stake! 10nm behind the leaders another duo: Greyhound and Fastrak. Are Nigel and David on their way to another leg victory? To do so they cannot lose too much ground to Hotsocks. Arriving late at the starting line could have cost Katie and Matthew first place… JR
